The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 for “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people.” Twenty years later, the General Assembly decided that 21 September would be observed annually as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence" and invited all Member States, organizations and individuals to commemorate the day, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the establishment of a global ceasefire.

This year the Secretary-General is asking governments and citizens to focus on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. This is the petition put forth by the U.N.:
WE, the undersigned, believe that the world has reached a moment of both opportunity and urgency on the issue of nuclear weapons. We fully support United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message to mark the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace and take up his challenge to build on the momentum on the part of world leaders to address the issue of nuclear weapons. We join him in the 100 days leading up to the International Day of Peace on September 21, 2009, to send a clear signal that we can no longer afford nuclear weapons — they threaten our existence and drain resources. Sign this declaration to show your support. The time to act is now. We Must Disarm Today!
