NOTICE: NYC SCHOOLS CLOSED 2/10

NOTICE:

Subject: School Closure Tomorrow

At one p.m., the Mayor will be announcing that all New York City public schools will be closed tomorrow because of weather conditions. All afterschool activities and PSAL events will also be cancelled. Even if conditions are fine in morning, we expect conditions to worsen as the day progresses which would make dismissal challenging. We are making this decision today to give parents as much time as possible to make alternative plans for tomorrow. Please make every effort to advise your parents today.

Rubber Rooms: Klein versus NYC Teachers

"Rubber rooms" have been in the news as of late. It made me think of this August 2009 article published in the New Yorker.

The inhabitants are all New York City schoolteachers who have been sent to what is officially called a Temporary Reassignment Center but which everyone calls the Rubber Room.

These fifteen teachers, along with about six hundred others, in six larger Rubber Rooms in the city’s five boroughs, have been accused of misconduct, such as hitting or molesting a student, or, in some cases, of incompetence, in a system that rarely calls anyone incompetent.

By the time Bloomberg took office, forty-two years later, many education reformers believed that the U.F.T. and its political allies had gained so much clout that it had become impossible for the city’s Board of Education, which already shared a lot of power with local boards, to maintain effective school oversight.

February 2nd: Charter School Advocacy Day

From NYSCA

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2010
2010 Charter School Advocacy Day!
At the State Capitol, Albany, NY

That's right, charter schools should mark their calendars for Tuesday, February 2nd for the annual charter school Advocacy Day where all charter school stakeholders - parents, students, employees, and trustees - can join forces to lobby state legislators and policymakers on behalf of your school and New York's charter movement at our state's capital city of Albany.

Last February, Advocacy Day drew 800 participants from all over New York State - a record number we hope to exceed this coming February.

Advocacy for your charter school, and the charter school movement as a whole, is vital. Charter schools were authorized by the state Legislature and subject to laws created by and subject to change by the Legislature in a way that could advance or cripple a charter school's ability to succeed for its students.
