Become an Ambassador of Jobs for Change

Jobs for Change Vision

From Change.org:

"Jobs for Change is being launched at a time of both crisis and opportunity.

The crisis we face is rooted not only in our faltering economy but also in our national failure to confront major challenges, from education to energy to health care. At the same time, President Obama has inspired renewed interest in public service, providing a historic opportunity to mobilize people to address problems that have been ignored for too long.

The mission of Jobs for Change is to help take full advantage of this opportunity by recruiting a new generation of leaders into the nonprofit, government, and social enterprise sectors.

We believe

* People are the most important factor in advancing social change. To address the social and environmental problems we face, we need to attract a diverse range of people and the most promising leaders from across the country to work on issues both local and global in scope.
* To attract these people, we need to enhance the social sector's ability to recruit, develop, and retain talent. Too many people interested in a career in service do not end up or remain in the sector because of a range of obstacles that include misperceptions about work and compensation, insufficient information about how to take the first steps, or limited recruiting resources from budget-strapped organizations. We need to address these issues.
* Innovative businesses should join as partners with nonprofits and government in the pursuit of social good. One of the most promising movements in social change is the use of business as a vehicle for advancing the common good, and the rapidly expanding social enterprise sector should be embraced and encouraged.

This is a moment of incredible potential. If together we harness the renewed interest in public service by recruiting and developing the next generation of leaders in the social sector, we can overcome the challenges we face and build a better future for us all."

Marriage Equality Bill Passes NY Assembly

The marriage equality bill (A.7732/O’Donnell) (S.4401/Duane) has passed the New York State Assembly with bipartisan support. The vote was 89-52, including 5 Republicans. The bill provides access to marriage for same-sex couples.

The bill goes to the Senate for a vote next. And if passed, New York will be the sixth state in the country to legalize gay marriage.

May is American Wetlands Month!

To find out more, click here.

From the EPA:
"This May will mark the 19th anniversary of American Wetlands Month, a time when EPA and its partners in federal, state, tribal, local, non-profit, and private sector organizations celebrate the vital importance of wetlands to the Nation's ecological, economic, and social health. It is also a great opportunity to discover and teach others about the important role that wetlands play in our environment and the significant benefits they provide - improved water quality, increased water storage and supply, reduced flood and storm surge risk, and critical habitat for plants, fish, and wildlife."

Sign the petition to pass the Matthew Shepard Act

Sign the petition!

Sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign:

"While all violent crimes are heinous, hate crimes are uniquely destructive, casting a pall of terror over an entire community. They don't just target a single victim. They are designed to "send a message" that an individual and "their kind" will not be tolerated, often leaving large numbers of people feeling isolated, vulnerable and unprotected. A law protecting all of our citizens against senseless hate violence is long overdue.

Two years ago, radical right-wing groups and George W. Bush's veto threat blocked the Matthew Shepard Act, which would outlaw hate crimes based on both sexual orientation and gender identity. But now that President Bush is out of office, the bill is back.

Attacks against LGBT people are one of the more common forms of hate violence but, tragically, one of the least protected. Hate crimes as a whole declined one percent last year, according to the FBI, but LGBT hate crimes increased six percent.

The House of Representatives passed a version of the bill, now tell the Senate that we need the Matthew Shepard Act to help ensure safety and security for ALL people."

End the Embargo: Normalize Relations with Cuba

Sign the petition.

From MADRE:
"We are calling on the Obama administration to fulfill a promise for change. For almost fifty years, the United States has waged a fierce battle against Cuba - a battle that has done untold harm to the country's civilian population and their families in exile.

The embargo must end. It has always been, and continues to be, a clear violation of human rights and international humanitarian law. By preventing Cuba from importing needed food, medicines, replacement parts for water treatment plants and other critical infrastructure, the US has caused sickness, hunger and preventable deaths.

President Obama has said that he’s in favor of allowing unlimited family travel and remittances to Cuba. He also included provisions in last month's spending bill that ease some of the newest travel and trade restrictions enacted under the Bush administration. While these are steps in the right direction, we urge an immediate and complete end to the embargo, passage of pending legislation in the House and Senate (H.R. 188, H.R. 847 and S. 428) that would allow unrestricted travel, and a normalization of diplomatic relations.

Tell President Obama, your Representative and your Senators to normalize relations with Cuba and extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people."
