President Obama declares September 28 National Family Day

Today President Obama issued a proclamation recognizing September 28 as Family Day, in recognition of the nation's families, including those with same-sex parents.

FAMILY DAY, 2009 ------- BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION

Our family provides one of the strongest influences on our lives. American families from every walk of life have taught us time and again that children raised in loving, caring homes have the ability to reject negative behaviors and reach their highest potential. Whether children are raised by two parents, a single parent, grandparents, a same-sex couple, or a guardian, families encourage us to do our best and enable us to accomplish great things. Today, our children are confronting issues of drug and alcohol use with astonishing regularity. On Family Day, we honor the dedication of parents, commend the achievements of their children, and celebrate the contributions our Nation's families have made to combat substance abuse among young people.

The 21st century presents families with unprecedented challenges. Millions of women and men are struggling to balance the demands of their jobs with the needs of their families. At the same time, our youngest generation faces countless distractions in their social environment. They are coming of age in a world where electronic devices have replaced the playground, televisions have preempted conversation, and pressure to use drug and alcohol is far too prevalent. Parents bear significant stress and burdens to protect their children from harmful influences.

It is our responsibility to talk with adolescents about the risks of abusing alcohol, tobacco, or prescription and illicit drugs, and other harmful behaviors. These substances can destroy the mind, body, and spirit of a child, jeopardizing their health and limiting their potential. Active parents, voicing their disapproval of drug use, have proven themselves to be the most effective preventative method for keeping our children drug-free. A strong and engaged family can make all the difference in helping young people make healthy decisions.

By coming together as a family and discussing the events of the day, parents can foster open communication, share joys and concerns, and help guide their children toward healthy decisionmaking. A strong nation is made up of strong families, and on this Family Day, we rededicate ourselves to ensuring that every American family has the chance to build a better, healthier future for themselves and their children.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 28, 2009, as Family Day. I call upon the people of the United States to join together in observing this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities to honor and strengthen our Nation's families.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

NY Cares Needs You for New York Cares Day

About New York Cares Day:

The Department of Education lost $180 million from its budget last year, forcing schools to cut or postpone revitalization and upkeep projects. But thousands of New York City public school children deserve brighter, safer, and more stimulating learning environments.

Join 8,000 New Yorkers on Saturday, October 17, to give our schools what they need and fundraise to support New York Cares' year-round programs.

Three Steps to Get Involved:

Step 1: Register or join a team.
Step 2: P
ay the $20 registration fee.
Step 3: Start fundraising.

Latest Update from New York Cares:
We have less than a month to go until New York Cares Day, but we're 2,000 volunteers short of the 8,000 we need to complete all the tasks we've committed to do. Help us keep our promise to public schools — recruit more volunteers for your team or create a team for New York Cares Day today.

We've extended the team registration deadline to September 30, so there's plenty of time to get started. Creating a team takes just minutes, and your teammates have until October 9 to sign up. Click here to learn more about New York Cares Day.

International Day of Peace

September 21 is the UN International Day of Peace, a day of global ceasefire and non-violence.
The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 for “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people.” Twenty years later, the General Assembly decided that 21 September would be observed annually as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence" and invited all Member States, organizations and individuals to commemorate the day, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the establishment of a global ceasefire.
To read more about the International Day of Peace, check out the UN's page.

This year the Secretary-General is asking governments and citizens to focus on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. This is the petition put forth by the U.N.:
WE, the undersigned, believe that the world has reached a moment of both opportunity and urgency on the issue of nuclear weapons. We fully support United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message to mark the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace and take up his challenge to build on the momentum on the part of world leaders to address the issue of nuclear weapons. We join him in the 100 days leading up to the International Day of Peace on September 21, 2009, to send a clear signal that we can no longer afford nuclear weapons — they threaten our existence and drain resources. Sign this declaration to show your support. The time to act is now. We Must Disarm Today!
Sign the "We Must Disarm Declaration" on the International Day of Peace.

About Peace One Day:
Peace One Day looks to engage all sectors of society, including governments, organisations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organisations and individuals in observance of 21 September, through the practical manifestation of non-violence and ceasefire in accordance with UN GA Resolution 55/282, and encourage action on Peace Day that creates a united and sustainable world.

Video: Obama on Healthcare

Check out Obama's speech on healthcare reform.

Watch Obama's Address Tonight 9/9

Tonight, September 9, Obama is addressing Congress and discussing health care reform. Presidential Health Care Watch Parties are being organized to watch the speech.
On Wednesday night, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, President Obama is delivering a major address on health insurance reform to a special joint session of Congress. It'll be a historic event -- and a turning point in our push for real reform.

We'll gather together to hear directly from the President. And after the speech, everyone at these parties will be able to take part in an important conference call with former Obama for America campaign manager David Plouffe about the work we'll still need to do to help pass real reform this year.

This is a great opportunity to interact with other supporters who share your passion for reform at this critical moment. And it's an even better time to bring along that friend or co-worker who has had questions about reform or has heard a lot of the misinformation -- on Wednesday night, they'll be able to hear the facts straight from the President.
Check out BarackObama.com to find events in your neighborhood. Or host your own Presidential Health Care Address Watch Party.

NYC Students & Schools Are Still In Need of School Supplies

Back to school season is upon us. Many kids do not have the supplies they need. The Washington Post ran an article discussing the shortage of school supplies.

The back-to-school season is placing some area social service agencies closer than ever to the clients they serve: Both have an increased need for supplies.

With more people struggling to hold on to their jobs and their homes in the economic downturn, families are asking for help in record numbers, agencies and government officials said. And a number of agencies said they, too, need help filling requests. Some groups that traditionally have had robust back-to-school drives said they are struggling to secure enough donations.

Check out the article to read more.

To donate supplies, check out the Department of Education's resource page and NYC.gov's donation guide page. They have great suggestions on where to donate.

Many large stores, like Target, Office Depot and Staples, have school supply sales as do stores like Family Dollar and Lots for Less.

Check out this article that gives some great suggestions from Charity Guide.

If you are outside NYC, google places in your city, call your local school and ask or check out online donation sites like I Love Schools.
